CHEQUERED FLAG-Matt Sainsbury

The Microsprint community is mourning the loss of NSW Club stalwart, Matt Sainsbury.  Matt passed away, Sunday, May 9th, 2010, after a short illness.

He was 64.

Known to all as "Matty", he had been part of the Microsprint scene since the late '90's, when he and son Brett purchased their first Microsprint from Tony Ward.
An active committee member over the years, he helped to guide the club through good and bad times in his role as treasurer.  Often seen as cantankerous, Matty did not suffer fools gladly, but had a heart of gold, a generous nature, and once you earned his respect, you had a friend for life.

Highlighting his generosity was the time a new driver experienced a delay in hitting the track.  Matty and another member learned of this and promptly struck a deal, were one would supply the car, and Matt would supply the engine.  The only reward being, getting another car on the track. Typical of his club spirit.

Goodbye old friend.  May you have blue skies and green lights from now on.  You will be sadly missed.

BYRON DOMINATES NATIONAL CAPITAL

Beautiful Autumn weather greeted competitors, as the National Capital Speedway, near Canberra, roared into life, Sunday 2nd May, when the Microsprints took centre stage for Round 9, of the NSW Club Pointscore Championship.

The unique layout of the Canberra track produced breathtaking racing from the Micros that kept the crowd entertained all day. Heat races saw Jeff Byron(x2) and Brett Sainsbury emerge victorious.

Byron went into the feature as favourite, after a dominant display in the heats. After starting last, he skilfully worked his way to the front, where he was never headed, eventually crossing the line a comfortable winner over Brett Sainsbury and Mitch Isaacs. Rod Baker was fourth, while Steve Ellicott and Rhys Marchant both failed to finish.

Congratulations to the National Capital Motorsports Club for an excellent days racing at an awesome racetrack.

PURPLE HAZE HAS RIVALS IN A DAZE

Brett Sainsbury handed out a driving lesson to his fellow competitors on Saturday Night (April 10) taking out the final round of the Mike Isaacs Memorial at Goulburn.
Continuing with his red hot form of the past few months, Sainsbury took the lead at the drop of the green and proceeded to drive away from his rivals.

Second placed Jeff Byron put in the drive of the night, after starting deep in the pack(due to dropping a heat),putting Sainsbury under pressure late in the race as the pair negotiated lapped cars.  Steve Ellicott put in a polished drive to finish third, thereby giving him the Isaacs Memorial Trophy for 09-10.

The Goulburn club should be praised on providing yet another sensational racetrack, with the large crowd witnessing some breathtaking racing on the night.  Heat wins were taken out by Ellicott and Sainsbury.  At the completion of the final round,  top three on points were:-

STEVE ELLICOTT...........142 points
BRETT SAINSBURY.......128 points
RHYS MARCHANT........123 points

FASTER THAN A SPEEDING BULLETT!

Steve Ellicott overcame weeks of indifferent form, to claim an emphatic win in Round 7 of the NSW Club Championship at Cullen Bullen Speedway, Saturday night (March 27th).
Starting mid pack, Ellicott took the lead shortly after the start and raced to victory, despite a late challenge by teammate Jeff Byron who finished second.  Mitch Isaacs was several car lengths behind in third.

Isaacs dominated the heats with two wins, while the remaining heat was taken out by Ellicott. With Cullen Bullen recently undergoing resurfacing, the track is in the best condition it has been in for years, as evidenced when Steve Ellicott circulated half a second faster in the Geoff Procter owned Waxim than regular driver Mitch Isaacs, when he turned some laps at the conclusion of the meeting.

SAINSBURY ON FIRE
Microsprints again lived up to their reputation, providing hard and fast racing, when they contested Round 2 of the prestigous Mike Isaacs Memorial at Goulburn Speedway on 20th March. The excellent racing surface allowing wheel to wheel action all night.

Starting from pole, current NSW Champion Brett Sainsbury, stormed to an awesome all the way win in the 15 lap final over Mr Consistancy Jeff Byron, with guest driver for the Bad Boy Mowers team Rhys Marchant putting in a stirring drive to claim third after starting deep in the pack.

Heat races saw the honours shared between Sainsbury and Byron with one win each. Rookie, Rod Baker, picked up his first Microsprint placing with an impressive third in Heat 1, but it all went pear shaped in the feature, when he thumped the wall shortly after the start and retired to the infield with a broken jacobs ladder.

Hollywood takes Gilgandra

Well where do I start, the Microsprints finally ventured back to Gilgandra after the debacle that was the NSW title event a couple of seasons ago.
This time however, for the Club Championship Pointscore Rnd, to our great surprise the event was fantastic, the officials did a fantastic job putting on a great run event with a good track served up as well, for what was set to be a cracker of a night of Microsprint Racing.

Unfortunately with only a car count of 6 and other divisions low in numbers as well, the night was always going to be run at a fast pace, however with 2 ten minute breaks thrown in during the night by the track officials the Microsprints were able to maintain all cars out on the track for all heat races and feature race event.

Heat 1 saw Gary Hart get up for a win with Jeff Byron and Brett Sainsbury hot on his tail.
Heat 2 went to the fast but getting faster Jay Hall , with Brett Sainsbury again on the podium with Steve Ellicott 3rd.
Heat 3 saw Jay "hollywood" Hall once again dominate to take the win from the ever fast Jeff Byron 2nd and once more Brett Sainsbury 3rd.

The Feature race was an absolute cracker with Jay Hall on tops points starting out of 3rd with Jeff Byron & Brett Sainsbury on the front row, after a trial start run the feature race was underway with Brett Sainsbury out in front with an ever fast Jeff Byron hot on his heels, and Jay Hall catching up in 3rd,but victory was not to be for Brett Sainsbury after a ever fast and willing Jeff Byron pulled off a move in turn 3 to see a coming together of Byron & Sainsbury.
With Jay Hall now in the lead he pushed the #28 Microsprint to all the Honda CRF 450 would give it, to take out the win of the feature with Jeff Byron closing fast in 2nd and 3rd to Steve Ellicott after a slow night with engine gremlins, Sainsbury 4th, Gary Hart 5th and Rod Baker 6th.

"OH What A Feeling"
Brett Sainsbury is the new 2010 NSW Microsprint Champion held at Nowra Saturday 20th February.
Sainsbury's win came on the back of some solid performances so far this season.Brett proved to be the man to beat over the course of the night, claiming two wins and a second from the qualifying heats to start pole for the 20 lap title race.

The start saw Sainsbury take the lead with Rhys Marchant (pos 4) quickly striding into second ahead of the chasing pack. Two laps down brought about the races only stoppage (and sunsequent retirement) when Marchant collided with a spinning Jeff Byron, which left Marchant parked on the infield for the remainder of the race.

Once underway again it was Sainsbury in command with Queenslands Les Nelson in second and Gary Hart third. As the race unfolded Sainsbury proceeded to increase his lead over the second placed Nelson, while Jeff Byron put in a spirited drive to claw his way to third late in the race at the expense of Hart.

Placings remained unchanged until the fall of the chequered flag with Sainsbury first Nelson second and Byron third. So dominant was Sainsbury that by race end he had lapped every car up to third position.

Cullen King Shows the way to Dougie
Well we all watched a Fantastic nights racing at Cullen Bullen come alive last night 30/1/2010 as USA19 driven by Doug Kekich was just awesome.

That guy sure knows his way around a dirt track with two 1st's and a 2nd in the heats and one of them from the back he sure put on a show and then along came King Ninja to spoil his party taking out the feature from Steve Ellicott with Doug Kekich 3rd a top drive from all three.

The other note worthy event from the night was seeing Rhys Marchant spin out all on his own whilst in the lead in one of the heats, when asked when was the last time any one had seen that before the history books were got out and some claim it was probably late 90's or early 2000.

Gary Hart put on another flame throwing performance which attracted a lot of attention all in all a good nights racing with no damage to any cars.

A BBQ will be held at the Little's Ranch For all Microsprint Club Members this coming Thursday night 4th at 7pm for Doug Kekich, an invite post reply on the forum is requested for attendance.

Troy Little takes the win at Goulburn Isaacs Memorial & Rnd 3 Club Championship

Round 3 of the Microsprint Club Championship and Round 1 of the Isaacs Memorial were held at Goulburn Speedway Saturday Night 12/12/09.

Troy came along to mix it up with the Microsprint regulars, and becoming a regular himself in the seat Troy did not dissapoint, taking out the first heat, and then the Feature, with 2 seconds in heat 2 & heat 3.

Troy did not however have it his own way, with having to chase down the current champ Steve Ellicott in the feature to race wheel to wheel for lap after lap,
until a fierce battle in turn 2 between the 2 racers saw Troy come through to take the win.

Jay Hall must take the Character building award with a 1st , 2nd & 3rd position in the heats to be on the front row in the feature to only have a front shock failure on the roll up laps spoil his night.

Hard charger Mitch Isaacs was struggling most of the night, but however was able to work on the Castle Printing Microsprint to place 3rd in the feature .

The next Club Championship Meeting is at Culen Bullen Speedway on the 30th of January 2010.

The Ginga Ninja wins at Cullen Bullen Rnd 1 of the N.S.W Micrsprint Club Championship

The first Round of the N.S.W Microsprint Championship kicked off at Cullen Bullen Speedway today 28/11/09 with an 11 car field for the round.

Cullen Bullen Speedway saw the 4 Stroke engines of Brett Finucane and Jay Hall do well on the loose surface with both cars placing in podium positions for the heats to then finish 1st and 3rd on the podium split only by the come back king Brett Sainsbury in his 270 powered 2 Stroke that Brett Tearfully dedicated to his Dad Matt doing it tough at the moment with medical problems.

The Australian Champ Steve Ellicott struggle on the loose surface but did score a heat win and two
3rd placings but went backwards in the feature to finish in 5th.

The first Round also saw Dion Gibbons from Victoria come up to play to help with the car count and gain race experience at the same time, Dion did a fantastic job gaining confidence with every lap turned in every heat race, however Dion DNF the feature race after a unfortunate coming together with Jeff Byron.

Congratulaions to all the Members that turned up for the first Club event with such fantastic looking cars, Well done.

Ellicott Wins Last Round with Byron hot on his heels

The last round of the 2008/2009 N.S.W Microsprint Club Championship came to a close over the past weekend with the last round run at the National Capital Speedway Fairburn Park ACT. The track was a challenge with a big up hill front straight and a definate down hill back straight, that saw plenty of gear changes from the Microsprint rockets every lap.

With a good turn out of cars ,and a couple of old members came back for a crack and enjoyed every minute of it, a big wlecome back to Mitch Isaac's and Jeff Byron.

Steve Ellicott however stole the show once again, with Jeff Byron 2nd, and Brett Sainsbury 3rd

N.S.W TITLE RUN & WON at CULLEN BULLEN SPEEDWAY 28/3/09

2nd Brett Finucane
1st Steve Ellicott
3rd Rhys Marchant

Cullen Bullen Speedway set the scene for the 2009 N.S.W Microsprint Title , which was a big change from the usual of many years previously.

Steve Ellicott was never headed, even after starting near last in the 1st heat, Steve drove clean around the outside of the entire field to take the first heat win, and then went onto win the 2nd & 3rd heat as well as the Feature to take the Title win.
2nd place in the title hunt went to Brett Finucane who placed in every heat, a 3rd, and two 2nd's, and then again second to Steve Ellicott in the Feature.

3rd placing went to "Mr Microsprint" Rhys Marchant, Rhys after placing 2nd in the first heat, went backwards in the 2nd & 3rd heats with a 4th & 5th placings, but made amends with a 3rd placing and final podium position in the 20 lap feature.

Hard Luck stories of the night had to go to Brett Sainsbury #53 only able to finish the 2nd heat after a DNF in the first heat, and 2 DNS 's in the 3rd heat and feature, as well as Jay Hall #28 with towing the car all the way to the track, for the engine to not fire at all. Congratulations also to 4th & 5th placings Paul Curran & Dick Koen, and 7th place getter as well as new comer Adam Burkey.

Plus the play of the day must got to Peter Priest, who not only drove his #8 Microsprint, but also did double duty in his #18+ Quarter Midget in their N.S.W Title Event as well.

Steve Ellicott Takes Isaacs Memorial Final Round & Series Win

Steve Ellicott has taken out the Feature win in the 3rd and final round of the Isaacs Memorial at Goulburn Speedway Saturday Evening 28/2/09, although the win did not come easy with series 2nd place getter Rhys Marchant winning not only the feature win in Round 2, but also heat 1 & 2 of last nights final round, Steve Ellicott however with the never give up attitude changed the car to eventually get a setup that would be the dominate force over Rhys Marchant to take the lead a few laps into the feature and never be headed from there after to take the win with Rhys Marchant 2nd, and the Rookie of 2009 Jay "Hollywood" Hall 3rd.

Series 2nd placing after the 2nd Round Brett Sainsbury unfortunatly suffered gearbox problems in the 2nd heat of last nights final round allowing 3rd & 4th place in the series to that point Rhys Marchant & Brett Finucane to gain positions on the night to take out 2nd & 3rd placings overall.

Congratulations must go to Steve Ellicott for the ever consistant and hardwork in the Isaacs Memorial series win, with Rhys Marchant 2nd, Brett Finucane 3rd Overall. The hard luck story must go to Brett Sainsbury with gearbox problems dening him of 2nd placing overall if not the outright win.

The Goulburn club again provided an excellent racing surface, that produced electrifying racing.Brett Sainsbury topped The points after two fine heat wins.Brent Keller had a night he would rather forget, after a wild flip in the second heat, Bringing his racing to a premature end.Steve Ellicott currently leads the Isaacs with 112 points, followed by Brett Sainsbury 90 points,Rhys Marchant,88 points and Brett Finucane,74 points.Final round,February 28th at Goulburn.    THE ALMANAC

HISTORIC PORTLAND WIN

Les Nelson scored a gutsy win in Rnd 3 of the Tricorp 10,000 Series at Southern 500 Speedway,Portland,Victoria(Jan 3).Polesitter,Steve Ellicott led for much of the 20 lap journey, only to lose the lead following a late race restart.Unable to mount a challenge Ellicott had to settle for second while back in the pack,Rhys Marchant put in a hercules drive to snare third, despite the best efforts of Queensland's Mark Giersbergen.

The six heat races saw Ellicott and Nelson share victories(3 wins each),all before a massive and enthusiastic Portland crowd.Veteran Queensland campainer,John Giersbergen, scored the wild ride of the night, when he flipped out of contention at the start of the A main.He was unhurt.Nelson's second Tricorp round win,now sees him at the top of the points ladder,2 points clear of Ellicott, with Marchant hanging onto third place.Next round Nowra,March 7th

ELLICOTT'S CLEAN SWEEP

Steve Ellicott has continued his good form,by taking the first round of the Mike Isaccs Memorial at Goulburn. He infact swept the program, winning both heats along the way to complete domination.Brett Sainsbury and Rhys Marchant showed good speed to push  Ellicott hard.Substituting for an out of action Jay Hal,was Speedcar hardcharger Darren Jenkins, who put in an impressive drive to finish second to Ellicott in the feature.Defending Isaccs champion Rhys Marchant was third.

HOT ACTION AT CULLEN BULLEN

Hot an suuny conditions greeted the Microsprints upon their return to Cullen Bullen(Sat 31) for the latest round of the club piontscore championship.Breathtaking racing was again the order of the day/night,with Queenslander,Steve McCollough,a welcome addition to the healthy field, along with comeback driver Dick Koen.McCollough unfortunately suffered engine problems and was unable to fire a shot in anger.

Steve Ellicott picked up where he left off at the last meeting, with a comfortable win in the feature.Polesitter Rhys Marchant, led until half distance,at which point Ellicott was able to effect a passing move as they ran sid by side down the front straight.Marchant was able to maintain second with a handy gap over third placed Brett Finucane, until the fall of the checker.High points man Brett Sainsbury failed to finish after starting position 6 in the feature race. Amazingly,Ellicott did not taste victory in any of the three heats, with wins going to Brett Finucane,Rhys Marchant and Brett Sainsbury

THE ALMANAC

Ellicott Shows the way in Isaac's Opener as Speedcar Star Takes 2nd
The First round of The Isaac's Memorial at Goulburn was run and won on Saturday night 17/01/09. A great night was had by all Drivers, Teams and crews with no reports of any crashes or spills just the odd spin out here and there as many drivers pushed their cars to the maximum grip levels.

As usual Goulburn Speedway served up a Fantastic race surface with a heavy track in the first 2 and only heats that got better as the sun went down and night fell.

The suprise of the night or not so, was Darren Jenkins whom driving the #54 Tricorp Security car of Mal Paton , slowly but surely got use to the Microsprints in the 2 heats to come out from last starting possy all night long to claim 2nd in his first ever feature race in a Microsprint, second only to the on form all season thus far Steve Ellicott taking out all 2 heat wins and the Feature as well, with the ever Mr Consistant Rhys Marchant taking 3rd place in the Feature after an enthralling battle with Darren Jenkins in the latter stages of the Feature race swapping 2nd and 3rd positions for a short hand full of laps.

As a one off Drive, Darren Jenkins has not taken any points from this 3 round series away from the regular drivers attending, making sure the remaining 2 rounds to come will be tight, fair and open slather and sure to be a series not to miss for any Microsprint driver.
